Rosary Wins Eighth State Swim Championship

Beads take the top spot at IHSA State Swimming and Diving Championships Nov. 11
Rosary won its eighth state title on November 11 at the FMC Natatorium in Westmont with a score of 243, surpassing defending champs New Trier (second, 203.5) and Stevenson (third, 182.5).

The Beads had qualified 14 individual races for the IHSA State prelims, qualifying the most races out of every high school swim team in the state of Illinois.

They turned out state championships in five events, with one new state record and one new school record.

Becky Rentz was victorious in the 200 free (1:47.47) and the 100 fly (53.47). She set new school records in both events!

Elizabeth Nawrocki was fastest of all in the 100 breaststroke (1:00.98), also a new school record!

The Beads’ foursome of Rentz, Olivia Moore, Bella Wojtowicz and Ariyana Nieckula won the 200 free relay, and in the process set a state record with their time of 1:32.45. The relay team had set a new state record in preliminaries Friday night (1:32.57), and then broke their own record in the finals! They also set a new school record.

Rosary’s 400 free relay team of Nieckula, Rentz, Wojtowicz and Annabelle Nawrocki also took home gold in the time of 3:24.21, setting a new school record.

Members of the state swim team are Alexandra Casanovas, Kailey de la Cruz, Kendall Mallers, Olivia Moore, Annabelle Nawrocki, Elizabeth Nawrocki, Ariyana Nieckula, Lauren O’Connor, Becky Rentz, and Bella Wojtowicz. Swim coaches are Glenn Brown, Misty (Laurich '95) O'Connell, and Catie Casanovas.

November 13, 2023, was proclaimed ROSARY BEADS DAY in the City of Aurora by Mayor Richard Irvin. We welcomed home our State Champion Beads in Royal fashion with a trolley parade escorted by the Aurora Fire and Police Department, an all-school assembly with special guest Mayor Irvin, and finished the celebration with State Championship Cake for all.

The Beads previously won State Championships in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2015, 2016, and 2017.
